Sugar Cane

We thought the sugar cane harvest would be completed by now.  It's winding down, but skies have been very smoky as we have driven to church in Santa Lucia Cotz.  No views of volcano El Fuego today.

Here's we what saw instead.

Workers burn the fields first to drive out snakes and small animals and to char the leaves and the cane.

The workers are in the foreground cutting down the sugar cane to be loaded on trucks.  See our post dated November 30, 2018 for a photo of the large trucks.

  1. What an unusual process - to burn it first and then harvest!

    1. Yes, they tell us they burn first to drive out the snakes and spiders. Yikes!
